Good morning. Here is what the JSE has waiting for you today.

Overnight global mood

Wall Street finished Friday's session with modest gains as investors digest mid-year positioning ahead of the July lull. London and European bourses followed suit with cautious optimism. Asia is settling into a holding pattern; nothing dramatic overnight, which means the JSE gets to write its own story today without a global emergency to react to.

Today's big stories

  • SPAR goes ultra-luxury in Zimbali. The retailer has opened a Gourmet store in KwaZulu-Natal's Zimbali Oasis, directly taking aim at Woolworths' dominance in high-end food retail. This is retail theatre at its finest; the message is clear. SPAR is not conceding the wealthy to Woolies anymore. Read more.
  • Social grants fuel millions of "second salaries". Former Capitec CEO Gerrie Fourie outlined how South Africa's social grant system effectively provides a secondary income stream for millions of citizens. Context here for fintech and retail banks watching consumer behaviour; SASSA flows are not going away, and neither are the businesses built to serve them. Read more.

Sector watch

Retail will draw eyes this morning. SPAR's luxury move, Woolworths' response, and the broader consumer narrative around spending power and foot traffic will ripple through the sector. Banking stocks may also stir if the social-grants conversation gains traction; consumer lending and payment flows are the underlying plumbing. Don't sleep on mid-caps benefiting from SASSA-fuelled demand.

One thing to watch

Whether Friday's retail energy translates into actual trading volume or if year-end portfolio shuffling dominates instead. This is the Friday before a long weekend in many places; liquidity dries up, and small-cap movers become brittle. Watch the closing bell carefully.

Friday before a long weekend; expect fireworks or absolutely nothing at all.

This is not financial advice. It's a morning coffee with context. Do your own research.
