JSE opens to soft global tone; watch the rand

Good morning. Here is what the JSE has waiting for you today.

Overnight global mood

Wall Street finished soft yesterday on mild recession chatter and a tech selloff that somehow felt orchestrated. London and Asia have picked up the baton and done little to reverse the mood. The MSCI World is pointing sideways to slightly down, which means the JSE will likely open without much tailwind, and the rand will probably find fresh reasons to feel sorry for itself.

Today's big stories

  • Mid-year economic data eyes on Eskom and load shedding intensity. The JSE watches power disruptions the way other markets watch interest rates. Today's trading will absorb any whispers about June's shedding patterns and what July might hold. Spoiler: it will be bad.
  • Rand volatility expected ahead of US inflation data Friday. The currency is already twitchy, and dollar strength overnight hasn't helped sentiment. Your offshore holding is worth watching closely as we inch toward tomorrow's US CPI print.
  • Dividend season winds down; watch for late claimers. Most major corporates have already paid or announced. Any last-minute special dividends or bumps will be small surprises rather than market movers, but they'll make certain retail portfolios smile.

Sector watch

Financials remain the most stable bet in a soft global backdrop, though offshore weakness could clip banking stocks on currency headwinds. Industrials and consumer discretionary will swing with sentiment and the rand's mood. Resources are hostage to global commodity weakness, so don't expect fireworks unless there's an unexpected positive surprise. Energy stocks (notably utilities) will track any whispers about state capture or Eskom's latest missed targets.

One thing to watch

The rand/dollar pair. If it breaks weaker than 18.50 by mid-morning, expect a ripple through the big exporters and a lift for the gold miners. If it firms, the broad index could face headwinds. It's not sexy, but it's the day's fulcrum.

Today's trade: expect patience to be rewarded and panic to be punished, as per the last twenty years.

This is not financial advice. It's a morning coffee with context. Do your own research.
