Good morning. Here is what the JSE has waiting for you today.
Overnight global mood
Wall Street finished last week on a cautious note, caught between inflation fears and cooling growth signals from the US labour market. London and Asian markets are digesting the usual mix of central bank commentary and earnings misses. The rand will be watching US data flows closely; a weak rand start is never what we order but usually what we deserve.
Today's big stories
Load shedding reprieve or mirage? Eskom's weekend schedule hinted at a brief lull in Stage 6 power cuts, though the utility has a track record of surprise blackouts that would make Steinhoff shareholders feel nostalgic. Energy-sensitive stocks like Impala Platinum and Sasol could see volatility depending on whether we actually get the grid to behave.
Rand volatility into the week. The currency opened softer on mild risk-off sentiment, and with US data coming this week, forex traders are nervous. This matters: a weaker rand inflates rand-hedged earnings for JSE-listed multinationals but wallops import-heavy retailers.
Banking sector quietly watching credit conditions. No major bank earnings this week, but analysts are tracking household debt stress signals ahead of the Reserve Bank's next decision. Absa, FirstRand and Standard Bank are pricing in tighter lending conditions if unemployment data turns uglier.
Property and retail braced for Monday trades. Weekend retail footfall data trickled in muted; the usual suspects (Dis-Chem, Shoprite, Pick n Pay) will be watched for signs of whether consumer spending has finally found a floor or is still drilling.
Sector watch
Keep an eye on Financials and Industrials today. The former are sensitive to rate-cut expectations (which look delayed now), and the latter hinge on load shedding and rand weakness. Resources are the wildcard. Precious metals will track overnight gold and platinum prices, while oil-linked stocks ride the energy sentiment tide. This is a day for sectoral rotation watching rather than direction betting.
One thing to watch
The rand-dollar pair. If it breaks through 18.50 early, expect a ripple across export-heavy stocks and a boost to hedged earnings. If it holds above 18.20, you're seeing a bit more buying interest in SA assets. See what JSE investors are saying right now on StockTalk.
