Good morning. Here is what the JSE has waiting for you today.
Overnight global mood
Wall Street ended the week flat, London finished fractionally higher, and Asia is grinding through a mixed session as markets await clarity on US inflation data. The real story for South Africa is the gold price holding firm above $4,500 an ounce—a decade-high tailwind for the JSE's mining heavyweights. Precious metals are having their best month in at least twenty years, which means the rand has slightly less reason to dive today, though Eskom's latest power station hiccup might argue otherwise.
Today's big stories
Gold miners are party time. South African precious-metal mining stocks are tracking their biggest monthly jump in two decades as gold and platinum prices recover from earlier slumps. This is the kind of news that gets retail investors excited at exactly the wrong time, but this month it actually feels real. Read more.
Sibanye's earnings about to do a backflip. The mining giant's profits are expected to jump 560% on the back of higher gold and platinum prices, turning what looked like a grim year into something borderline respectable. Watch for the actual numbers when they land. Read more.
Koeberg is off. Eskom's Koeberg Nuclear Power Station is now completely offline after Unit 1 tripped, which means load shedding season just got cosier for all of us. Retailers and industrials will be watching their diesel invoices climb. Read more.
Retail's new frontier. Clicks is rolling out a new township-focused brand to compete for consumers outside formal retail, while Fleurhof Mall's opening in Johannesburg adds fresh competition for Pick n Pay, Shoprite, and other volume players in property and grocery. Both stories signal where the real growth pressure is. Read more.
Sector watch
Mining is the obvious play; gold and platinum strength is real and the JSE's heavyweights will wake up lighter on their feet. Retail stocks will be split between relief (better volumes in the economy) and anxiety (Eskom's power cuts will keep foot traffic bruised). Industrial and logistics names will hate Koeberg's shutdown. Keep one eye on the rand—it's correlated to gold price moves, and a stronger dollar could undo some of the commodity bounce by lunch.
One thing to watch
Mining sector broadly, but if you want a single ticker, Sibanye-Stillwater is the obvious tracker. A 560% earnings jump doesn't happen by accident, and Friday's trade will reveal whether the market prices that in or if the old "mining stocks always disappoint" reflex wins.
