Weekly JSE Wrap

Week of 20 July 2026 – 24 July 2026

Hello StockTalkers,

The JSE spent the week playing a familiar game of musical chairs while Schröder Eur REIT dropped so hard it nearly achieved escape velocity. SCD cratered 99.27% in five days, which in polite company we call a strategic repositioning. Meanwhile, penny stocks did what they do best: oscillate wildly. Cilo Cybin Holdings and Sebata Holdings climbed 28.21% and 27.78% respectively, probably on the back of a WhatsApp rumour and an out-of-context headline. The blue chips barely moved. JSE All Share slid 0.16% while the Top 40 scraped a 0.21% gain. In a week when the speculative names provided the fireworks, the bellwethers opted for a nap.

The rand's troubles deepened as Citigroup closed its bullish euro position and declared the currency fragile. USD/ZAR jumped 1.81% to 16.80, a reminder that South Africa's currency mood swings are now a spectator sport for international banks. Inflation came in hotter than expected at 5.0% for June, yet the Reserve Bank held rates steady on Tuesday. Economists squinted at the data and muttered about hikes being more likely next time. The irony was not lost: your purchasing power erodes while your cash earns nothing. Load shedding, inflation, and a weakening rand is the South African trifecta nobody ordered.

For retail investors watching Old Mutual, Netcare, and Pepkor this week (the most actively traded names), the message was simple: when economic headwinds arrive, defensive plays underperform. OMU dropped 5.59%, PPH fell 3.56%. But mining names like Sibanye Stillwater and Pan African Resources posted 7.62% and 7.61% gains respectively, a reminder that commodity bulls haven't given up. The spreads on penny stocks are murderous and the liquidity dries up fast. Avoid the FOMO. Your EasyEquities portfolio will thank you when you skip the CCC bounce and avoid the SOH trap.

EskomSePush: The App That Became SA's Best Friend

Two engineers, Dan Southwood-Wells and Herman Maritz, built South Africa's most useful application over one weekend as a side project. EskomSePush tells you when load shedding hits your area—a feature that, depending on your suburb and mood, ranges from handy to life-changing. The app now guides millions of South Africans through the power crisis with real-time notifications and countdown timers. It's a reminder that sometimes the most valuable business ideas solve problems nobody else is taking seriously.

Schröder Eur REIT's weekly collapse was so severe it raises questions about why anyone was still holding it by Wednesday. A cautionary tale for dividend chasing.

The rand weakened 1.81% against the dollar to 16.80 this week, breaking through levels traders had been watching. The move reflects both domestic inflation surprises and a shift in international sentiment toward SA as a funding destination. When Citigroup closes its euro call, other banks notice.
