Weekly JSE Wrap
|
|
Hello StockTalkers,
The JSE All Share dropped 2.21% this week, with the Top 40 sliding 2.30%, as September's bloodbath continued into early October. The damage was already done. R1.6 trillion vanished from market cap last month, and this week confirmed that investors are still reaching for the exit door. Yet buried in the wreckage is a genuine bright spot: Lesetja Kganyago delivered what retail investors dream of. The Reserve Bank expects inflation to cool sharply in coming months and hit its 3% target next year. That's the kind of news that normally sparks a rally. It didn't. Why? The rand had other ideas. USD/ZAR surged 1.96% to 16.66, because global money flows matter more than local inflation forecasts when the world is nervous. The weak rand is now the story within the story. Petrol and diesel are set to jump by R3 at the pump in October, pushed up by surging oil prices and currency weakness. For a struggling consumer already squeezed by interest rates, that's salt in the wound. Eskom announced a six-month delay to grid expansion (14 000 kilometres over the next decade). Load shedding remains the unspoken tax on every business. And agriculture is bracing for El Niño. South African agriculture is only 3% of GDP, but it shapes food prices, rural employment and credit books far beyond that share. When farmers are hurting, everyone feels it. The macro backdrop is less 'recovery rally' and more 'pain delayed is pain compounded'. For retail investors, this week served up contrasts that matter. Numeral Limited (XII) exploded 154.55% on speculative volume; Oando PLC (OAO) crashed 35% just as violently. Putprop (PPR) and Primeserv (PMV) both climbed decisively, but Old Mutual (OMU), Firstrand (FSR) and other blue-chip holdings took modest knocks. The message is clear. Momentum names are moving on hope and rumour. Dividend stalwarts are grinding lower on rate anxiety and currency pain. If you own banks or insurance, you're suffering a slow bleed. If you own micro-caps, you're riding the lottery. For most retail investors in EasyEquities, the sensible move remains boring discipline; set your alerts, stick to quality, and ignore the weekly noise. The rand's mood swing and inflation hopes will sort themselves out eventually. Your portfolio won't.

Market Moment
Why the Reserve Bank's Good News Didn't Save the JSE
Lesetja Kganyago delivered what retail investors have been waiting for: confirmation that inflation will cool sharply and return to the 3% target next year. It should have sparked a rally. Instead, the JSE sank another 2.21% as the rand weakened 1.96% against the dollar. The real story is global. South Africa's interest rates may be about to fall, but international investors are pulling capital out of emerging markets. The rand's weakness means import costs will rise, fuel prices will follow, and the consumer pain may deepen before inflation relief arrives. Read the full context and track the signals that matter most to your portfolio.

R1.6 trillion wiped from JSE market cap in September alone, as the Africa All Share index sank 6.7%. That's the cost of global capital flight and emerging market anxiety. For retail investors, it serves as a reminder that bull markets feel earned, but bear markets feel personal.

This week the rand weakened 1.96% to 16.66 even as the Reserve Bank flagged incoming inflation relief. The disconnect reveals the core tension in South African markets. Local rate cuts matter less than global risk sentiment when the dollar is in demand. Watch this chart over the next fortnight. If the rand stabilises below 16.50, retail investors can breathe. If it cracks toward 17.00, import costs will bite hard before interest rate relief arrives.
