Weekly JSE Wrap
|
|
Hello StockTalkers,
The JSE All Share gained 2.22% this week, with the Top 40 doing even better at 2.45%, but don't mistake breadth for tranquility. Datatec collapsed 36.25%, making it the week's most spectacular implosion; Europa Metals fell 31.65% and Arcelormittal slumped another 16.67%, suggesting the market's appetite for resources and industrial plays remains as reliable as Eskom's energy supply. On the flip side, Huge Group soared 31.25%, Clicks rallied 11.73%, and Combined Motor Holdings climbed 11.03%, proving that if you find the right stocks, the JSE will reward you handsomely. The real story this week was volatility masquerading as direction. Most active stocks—Old Mutual, Pepkor Holdings, and Ioco—barely budged despite heavy trading, the market's way of saying it needs conviction, not just volume. The Reserve Bank Governor delivered good news about the rand this week, noting it has held up surprisingly well despite international turmoil (the Iran conflict, in this case). The USD/ZAR weakened 0.53%, a modest but meaningful move that reflects genuine confidence in South Africa's economic management. Whether that confidence is warranted or simply a result of the rand's historical pattern of lurching between crises is, of course, another question. More intriguingly, the Reserve Bank is planning to create a cash-management company by next year, signalling that the era of ATMs and physical cash might finally be winding down. Meanwhile, whispers of a R50 billion tax overrun for the first half of 2026 are circulating, a reminder that good currency moves don't always translate to good fiscal news. For the retail investor, this week offered a masterclass in why timing is everything. Those holding Datec got schooled; those who rode Huge or Clicks kept smiling. The real lesson: property funds (Texton up 12.24%, Accelerate Prop Fund treading water at 0.38) and retail plays (Clicks, Combined Motor) are where the conviction is flowing. The rand's stability is a small comfort if you're holding a property that still needs to generate rent or a retail asset that needs footfall. Load shedding is mercifully quieter, but fuel and energy plays remain under siege. Watch the most active stocks closely next week; when Old Mutual, Pepkor, and the property funds start moving with real direction, the broader market usually follows.

MARKET MOVE OF THE WEEK
Datatec's 36% Implosion: When Tech Meets Tech Winter
Datatec's 36.25% collapse this week wasn't just a stock falling. It was a referendum on the entire technology services space in South Africa. The JSE's largest tech play hasn't been immune to global headwinds, and local investors have finally started asking the hard questions. When a stock loses more than a third of its value in five days, it's not noise. It's signal. Whether it's earnings misses, margin compression, or simply mean reversion after a long run, Datatec's implosion reminds us that even blue-chip tech stocks can leave you exposed. The good news: it creates opportunity for the patient. The bad news: timing the bottom is harder than it looks.

The JSE All Share's weekly gain masks a market split between collapsing tech (Datatec down 36.25%) and resilient retail and property plays. Breadth without conviction is a warning sign.

This week's market performance split sharply between sectors. Clicks, Huge Group, and Combined Motor Holdings posted double-digit gains, while Datatec, Europa Metals, and Arcelormittal suffered double-digit losses. The message is clear: the market isn't rewarding broad exposure. It's rewarding selectivity. Retail and property are in favour; tech, metals, and industrial plays are under pressure. Watch this divergence closely; when winners and losers are this far apart, mean reversion often follows.

Nothing says 'confidence in your portfolio' like watching Datatec fall 36% in a week and telling yourself you saw it coming.
