Introduction: Course Overview - Why Start Investing, and What You'll Learn
Why does this matter right now?
In July 2026, South Africa's annual inflation rate stood at 4.3%. That means R1,000 sitting in a low-interest bank account today will buy meaningfully less in real terms a year from now — even before tax on any interest it earns. Cash isn't "safe" in the way it feels safe; it quietly loses purchasing power every year it just sits there.
Investing is a real, long-term ownership of productive businesses, one of the most accessible ways ordinary South Africans can grow their money faster than inflation erodes it. You don't need to be wealthy to start. You don't need to predict the market. You just need to understand what you're actually doing, and start.
That's what this course is built to give you.
What this course is not
This isn't a course about get-rich-quick schemes, day trading, or trying to time the market perfectly. Those approaches are genuinely risky, and most people who try them lose money. This course won't teach you to gamble on short-term price swings.
What this course actually is
A complete, honest path from knowing nothing about the stock market to being a confident, informed investor who owns real shares in real, licensed accounts and understands why those shares are worth holding. The course is split into two chapters, building on each other.
Chapter 1. From Basics to an Active Real Trading Account (11 lessons)
This is about getting you from zero to actually holding real, JSE-listed shares in your own name. You'll learn:
- What a share actually is, and how the JSE itself works — including just how much trades hands there every single day
- How stock splits and share buybacks affect (and don't affect) what you own
- How dividends work, and how South African dividend tax applies to you
- The real difference between genuine investing and leveraged CFD trading — and how to tell them apart on any platform
- Four real, licensed South African brokers are two independent, two bank-integrated and exactly how to open an account with each, step by step
- How to compare them and pick the one that actually fits your situation
By the end of Chapter 1, you'll have a real brokerage account, understand exactly what's in it, and know how to place your first order.
Chapter 2. All You Need to Know to Start Investing (11 modules)
Owning shares is the starting line, not the finish line. This chapter turns you into a genuinely informed investor who can evaluate what to actually buy, and why. You'll learn:
- How to read financial statements and understand what a company's numbers are really telling you
- How macroeconomic conditions and market instruments (bonds, ETFs, REITs) fit into a broader portfolio
- How to compare companies using valuation multiples, and get a working introduction to technical analysis
- How to manage risk and structure a portfolio you can actually stick with
- The psychology side of investing: why most investors sabotage their own returns, and how to avoid it?
- Benjamin Graham's value investing principles, adapted with real JSE context
- A final, practical action-steps checklist to take everything from theory into an ongoing habit
By the time you finish both chapters, you will be able to:
- Open and operate a real JSE brokerage account with confidence
- Understand exactly what you own and why its value moves the way it does
- Read a company's financials well enough to judge whether it's worth investing in
- Build and manage a diversified portfolio suited to your own risk tolerance and time horizon
- Recognise the psychological traps that derail most beginner investors before they derail you
Twenty-one lessons stand between where you are now and that point. Let's begin.
