Discovery makes money by insuring people against things going wrong, life cover and disability mostly, then keeping the difference between what they collect in premiums and what they pay out in claims. When they have a good year, they sometimes pay shareholders a dividend, which is just a slice of the profit handed back to you for owning the share. It's one of the reasons people hold insurance stocks long term instead of trading them.
